Austin SXSW - Rain Spoils the View

We got out on Friday night to 6th Street. SXSW crowds were out, but the rain, wind and cold spoiled the view. There were plenty of boots, shawls and hoodies, but only the brave went out in style.

We followed a couple of out-of-town visitors (English accents) that were wearing Little Black Dresses with high-heeled boots. They were stumbling down the street at 8:00 due to the weather (not the celebration).

The New "Bling" - Modesty

Mike "Mish" Shedlock of Global Economic Trend Analysis captures a quote from Dallas (the same quote appears in the NY Times) -

"Kim Gatlin, a novelist who lives in Park Cities, in the Dallas area, said some of her friends had urged their husbands not to give them jewelry over the holidays. “They were like, you know, ‘There’s nothing I’m dying for right now — let’s just wait,’ ” she said. “It makes them feel like they’re participating, although they don’t contribute to the income stream.”

Mish continues... "It's tough to want to flaunt wealth when so much wealth has vanished."

Style does not have to be expensive, and in the coming year expensive style is out.

Sometimes it is Nice to be a Girl...

Face it... guy fashion is getting to be an oxymoron.

Kris Van Assche presented his lineup at the Fall 2008 Men's Menswear Fashion Collection. This collection is really attractive in a "Duran Duran" kind-a way.

A runway of crisp white shirts, denim and cowboy boots might seem pretty bland, but you will not have to make many wild guesses about gender preference. And no outfit is complete without a nice belt buckle.

"The Reflex" = Reflux.

Conservatives: Pretty in Mink

ABC News has this interesting slide show: Pretty in Mink.

Fascinating. Most of the faces are familiar. The photography is striking - a modern reflection of the glamor of 100 years ago.

But, could the same result have been reached without the fur?

Botox, Breast Implants Deflate

"On Wednesday, Allergan (AGN), the maker of the anti-wrinkle shot Botox, exposed some cracks in its once-flawless public face... It is Botox that essentially measures vanity in our society.

The company reported that sales of Botox, which is used for erasing wrinkles and for medical problems, fell about 3% -- albeit to a still-robust $329 million -- in the fourth quarter of 2008, compared to the same quarter in 2007.

Allergan’s sales for breast implants fell 12% and facial fillers dropped 9% based on the same yearly comparison. Physical modesty is more affordable - and may be smarter personal advertising at present." Reported on Minyanville 02/09/09.

Physical modesty, or basic practicality?
